The clay, which is found in the region, is used by families in the village of La Chamba, located on the banks of the Magdalena River, to create these unique and authentic pieces. Each item is handcrafted, using local clays, and then burnished and fired on-site, resulting in a distinctive and elegant appearance.
The painstaking process and the use of natural materials give the Chamba Pottery its distinctive qualities. These dishes are renowned for their even heating and their ability to retain heat, making them ideal for the preparation of traditional meals, particularly for slow-cooked dishes such as vegetables, which need to retain their color and nutritional properties. The pottery is excellent for dry cooking, with very little water, or for use in the oven, as the food cooked in clay pots is said to be more flavorful.
For orders over US$300, Chamba Pottery can be personalized with the customer's last name or company name in low relief, adding a touch of personalization to the authentic pieces. These 100% handmade items from the village of La Chamba, Tolima, are made from clay that contains mica, which allows the pottery to withstand high temperatures.
Before using the Chamba Pottery for the first time, it is recommended to thoroughly clean each piece with a mild detergent to remove any residue from the firing process. Then, each piece should be filled ¾ full of water and placed in the oven for 30 minutes at 200 degrees Celsius. This process allows the Chamba items to seal, although due to the porous nature of the pottery, a complete seal is sometimes only achieved after the items have been used several times for cooking.
The elegant and decorative Chamba Pottery is the result of five days of hard work by the artisans who create each beautiful piece. By purchasing these items, customers are supporting the economy of 300 families of artisans in the region.
